Day 13 & 14 - Puerto Madryn Argentina

Day 13. Well we certainly hope you don’t feel misled by the title of this blog: Puerto Madryn, Argentina. The itinerary has the arrival time listed at 8:00 am so we set our alarm for 6:30 to give time for prep and breakfast. It’s now 6:30am and we notice the ship is not moving. That’s odd. Looking out we see that we are very close so we must be just waiting for our time to come. We take our showers and the captain comes on the speaker to tell us the news of the day. Apparently there was a cargo ship fire during the night. That ship just happened to be in the same space we were to use this day. This ship is now powerless to move anywhere. Our captain tells us that he’s in communication with the port and it’s impossible to use tenders because of the water levels. There is nowhere for them to dock for unloading. They are looking into getting a tug to pull the tanker out of the way for the day. It will be some time before we know anything and he will keep us posted. Hours go by and still no change in the news we keep getting. We are in the Windjammer CafĂ© when we run into the captain’s wife. We give her the idea to suggest to the captain that if we’re going to be waiting here all day we might as well be waiting at the other end of the harbor. We inform her that the other end is the location for all of the whale watching expeditions. We may as well get something out of where we are. She tells us that she will tell the captain, but will not bother him right now. Well, 12:00 comes and we finally get our definitive answer. We are not able to stop at Puerto Madryn. We love this ship so we have no ill-feelings regarding this matter at all. We hang out at the bow of the ship as we turn around and head out of the harbor. It’s a gigantic inlet so it’s going to take about 45 minutes. We aren’t scheduled to leave this area for another 4 ½ hours so we have plenty of time to veer to the port direction and check out some whales. The captain does not do this and we see nothing. We spend the remainder of the afternoon relaxing and then enjoy a wonderful dinner. This evening’s towel pet even crapped little chocolates on our pillows. Tonight’s show is called “Tango Buenos Aires”. Since all the tango shows in the city are going to be very expensive, (and to this point we are missing 5 deposits we were counting on and we are down 2 credit cards we were counting on) we decide to see this show. The 2 lead dancers are brilliant and it’s a wonderful show. The band is hot, everything’s working. We notice that the backup dancers and singers are from the murder mystery dinner last night. In watching and listening to them we are convinced that we know a couple of dozen people back home who could easily get jobs performing on cruise ships. Wouldn’t that be a great gig? Afterwards we head up to the Hollywood Odyssey cigar bar and unwind while listing to jazz piano. We talk about feeling bad for the city we never saw today. We estimate that they must have lost in the neighborhood of $500,000+ with tour revenues, tourist purchases, crew purchases and the materials the cruise ship was to buy. We know that the menu was changed “quite a bit” this evening because of missed shipments. As for us, this was one busted day that turned out to be a great one.

Day 14. Sleeping in and waking up to another “at sea” day; this one planned on the itinerary. We won’t bore you with the details of another relaxing day on this wonderful ship. After wonderful honeymoon “naps” in the afternoon we get ready for formal night at the dining room. But, and here’s the good part, it’s not just formal night; it’s lobster night! Carlos and Todd have 3 lobster tails each. It’s a great dinner and the kitchen staff chooses this night to make their big appearance and take a bow. When we return to the room we are reminded of our dinner and the families they left behind. Lobster diner buzz kill.

We document the most gorgeous sunset with our camera.

This evening’s headline show is Glenn Smith, a “Best of Vegas” award winner. We go to this show and enjoy it very much. He mixes comedy and singing and really uses the ship’s band to its fullest. We then spend the remainder of the night listening to “jazzy melodies” in the Hollywood Odyssey. We could live here easily.
